Call for Applications: Tenure-Track Position in Economic History Department of Social Sciences – Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

The Department of Social Sciences at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Economic History, with the appointment to begin in September 2026 or January 2027.

We are looking for candidates with a strong research trajectory and a proven or promising record of high-quality teaching in Economic History. The initial contract is for three years, renewable for an additional three years following a positive performance review. After five years, the candidate will be eligible for tenure, contingent upon a recommendation for promotion by the permanent faculty in the department and a Profesor Titular accreditation (equivalent to Associate Professor in the U.S. or Senior Lecturer in the U.K.) from ANECA (Spain’s Agencia Nacional de Evaluación de la Calidad y Acreditación) or similar (Spain’s research excellency programs like the Ramón y Cajal program or similar).

The Department of Social Sciences at UC3M is an interdisciplinary hub of research and teaching excellence, bringing together faculty in Sociology, Political Science, and Economic History. We value cutting-edge research, international collaboration, and a commitment to teaching. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the department’s research output, apply for external funding, and teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, particularly in courses relevant to Economic History. The teaching load is a maximum of 100 hours per academic year, which takes place in two 14-week terms: the first from September to December, with final examinations in January, and the second from February to May, with final examinations in late May. There is room for flexibility to concentrate the full load in just one term, leaving the rest of the year available for research.

The position is regulated by Spain’s Ley de la Ciencia (Contrato de acceso de personal investigador doctor), with a salary aligned with the starting salary of a Profesor Titular (Associate Professor) in the Spanish public university system.

Qualifications:

 • A Ph.D. in Economic History or a closely related field completed by the time of appointment.

 • A strong record or demonstrable potential for high-impact research and publication.

 • Evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

 • Fluency in English is required. Spanish is not required as a large share of the teaching in the department is carried out in English.
