The department of Economic History employs around 70 researchers, teachers, doctoral candidates, and administrative personnel. Research at the department includes topics such as Economic demography, Economic development of the Global South, and Growth, technological change and inequality.

Lund University announces one to two permanent positions as Senior Lecturer in Economic History. The position is full-time employment and is placed at the Department of Economic History, Lund University School of Economics and Management.

Job description

The position consists of teaching and supervision at bachelor, master and PhD levels, conducting own research, outreach, and a degree of administrative work. All faculty members are expected to actively apply for external research funding and develop the department’s research environment. Equally, all faculty members are also expected to participate in course development and pedagogical development at the department and its courses and programs. Further, faculty members are also encouraged to engage in collaboration with surrounding society. The candidate is expected to be positively oriented towards leadership and administrative roles such as Head of studies or Head of graduate studies.

During the first two years, the position includes at least 40% teaching, unless the department’s staffing situation allows otherwise. The allocation of duties between teaching, research, competence development and departmental responsibilities is determined based on departmental needs and may be adjusted over time. If the senior lecturer obtains external research funding, the distribution of duties may change, although any reduction in teaching is subject to the department’s teaching requirements.

Eligibility and qualification requirements

To be eligible as a Senior Lecturer, the applicant must:

  • have been awarded a PhD
  • have shown pedagogical skills.
  • and, following Lund University’s employment regulations, it is required for a senior lecturer to have completed at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or to have acquired these skills in another way.

To be qualified for the position, the applicant must have a PhD degree in Economic History or in adjacent fields. The applicant must have extensive teaching experience and significant research credentials in economic history.

Very good oral and written proficiency in English is a requirement. Applicants who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue are expected to acquire sufficient knowledge of Swedish to perform administrative and teaching duties within four years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as a senior lecturer shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4, Section 4).

At Lund University, the following shall form the assessment criteria for the position of Senior Lecturer:

  • a good national and international standing as a researcher – the requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject;
  • a good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct,develop and lead educational activities on different levels andusing a variety of teaching methods
  • a good ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD;
  • a good ability to engage with the wider society and communicate their activities;
  • a good general ability to lead and develop activities.

The overall evaluation of the pedagogical qualifications includes training in teaching and learning in higher education, pedagogical experience, and pedagogical skills.

In the overall assessment, a particular emphasis will be placed on:

  • demonstrated very high teaching proficiency at both undergraduate and advanced levels in Economic History, assessed through both quantitative and qualitative measures, including the extent of teaching and documented breadth and variation in themes and topics relevant to the Department of Economic History.
  • active research agenda with clear plans for continued scholarly development
  • recent publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with particular emphasis on top/high-impact outlets in Economic History and relevant adjacent disciplines
  • a very good national and international standing as a researcher, evidenced by publication record, scholarly impact, and recognition in the field
  • a proven ability to manage research projects, including seeking, winning, and administering competitively awarded research grants/funding
  • contributions to the international research community, such as participation in and organisation of workshops, seminars and conferences, as well as peer-review activities for journals and similar service
  • strong ability to supervise and develop doctoral education in Economic History.
  • experience as a course coordinator
  • ability to meet the needs of diverse students and to work with new methods and tools, for example AI-based tools
  • experience with engagement with practice/outreach, including writing for broader readerships and engagement with non-academic audiences (e.g., executive teaching and other outreach activities)

The ability to collaborate with colleagues, students and other parties will be taken into account in the overall assessment of both pedagogical skills and scientific skills.
