Capital, Trade, and Ideas. Economic and Political Models in the Relations Recent historiographical trends are opening new opportunities of research into the relationships and the construction of economic, political, and social spaces within the interactions between Spain, its colonies, and Europe during the 18th century. This period witnessed a redefinition of international political balances in the Atlantic world, involving not only Spain but also other major powers such as
England, France, and the Netherlands.
Starting from the War of Spanish Succession, the dynastic change, and the Treaties of Utrecht in 1713, the 18th century saw a continuous reshaping of balance-of-power and colonial policies. On one hand, the Spanish Monarchy sought to maintain a monopolistic trade with the Indies; on the other, rival powers pursued territorial conquests—some temporary, others more lasting—within Iberian colonial spaces. This ever-changing geopolitical scenario influenced Spain’s strongly mercantilist policies, aimed at preventing the outflow of its precious metals to other European nations, which, conversely, sought to gain economic advantages over the Iberian Monarchy.
