PhD-student for the Centre for Advanced Studies “Finance & Inequality” (deadline 13 ottobre)

The Department of Constitutional, Social and Economic History (VSWG) at the Institute of History is looking for a PhD-student for the Centre for Advanced Studies “Finance & Inequality” funded by the German Research Foundation from 1 January 2025

Income and wealth inequality is a problem that has been preoccupying science, politics and society for a long time. Within the Centre for Advanced Studies Finance & Inequality, you will use concrete examples to investigate how and in what ways banks and financial markets have increased or mitigated economic inequality since the 19th century. In addition, it will examine how banks and financial markets have changed in the face of varying income and wealth inequality. For example, salary structures in banks or spatial and social access to banks, financial markets and financial products could be examined. In your application, please outline at least one question that you would like to investigate within the framework topic of the Centre for Advanced Studies.

Your tasks:

 • Development of a research question and elaboration of a theoretical and methodological concept that will be used to work on the research question,

 • independent research and evaluation of the relevant historical and economic literature,

 • independent research and evaluation of the relevant archival materials,

 • Presentation of research results in internal workshops and at scientific conferences in Germany and abroad,

 • Writing an English-language dissertation.

Your profile:

 • a master’s degree in history, preferably with a focus on economic and social history,

 • knowledge of relevant related disciplines (economics and social sciences),

 • a committed, structured, self-reliant and team-oriented way of working.
