Utrecht University’s economic and social history has an exciting PhD opportunity to study this question for the case of the Netherlands between 1850 and 1950. The project will analyze the impact of air pollution on outcomes such as health, locational choices, occupational change, and schooling in Dutch cities during a period of rapid technological and economic growth. Using individual-level data, this relationship will be examined in general, but also differentiated by socio-economic status. The case is particularly interesting as the Netherlands industrialized late and had access to less polluting technologies. Moreover, pollution regulations at that time were enforced at the discretion of municipalities, and the project will investigate their impact and why some municipalities enforced them while others did not.
This supervision team consists of Swantje Falcke, Auke Rijpma, Liesbeth van der Grift and Kees Klein Goldewijk.
