Post-doctoral researcher on the aftermath of slavery in twentieth-century Buganda

YOUR TASKS

Applications are invited for a two-year post-doctoral position researching the aftermath of slavery in twentieth-century Buganda, starting on or as soon as possible after 10 October 2023. The holder will be affiliated with the History Department and be part of a research group on the aftermath of slavery in East Africa, funded by the European Research Council. The topic of this research project is the life trajectories of formerly enslaved people in Bugandan society from ca. 1900, and the role of slavery in social memory and public discourse. Principal investigator on the project is Felicitas Becker (see https://research.flw.ugent.be/en/feli.becker). There is no obligation to teach, but contributions to teaching can be arranged.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Applicants will have completed a PhD in African history or a related discipline by the time they start work. For fieldwork purposes, candidates will need a working knowledge of Luganda, a demonstrable capacity for acquiring new languages quickly, or a track record recruiting and working with research assistants in the field.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

The post will start on October 10 2023 at the earliest for the duration of two years.

The salary will be determined by salary scale PD1 to PD4, depending on seniority.  Click here for more information about our salary scales. In practice this typically means a salary in the mid-2000s.
